Small molecules such as amino acids, carbohydrates, and lipids are essential for cellular functions. They provide structural elements, acts as chemical signals and participate in energy metabolism. Several thousand small molecules or metabolites, endogenous as well as exogenous have been measured in various human cell types, tissues, organs or body fluids.
Together, all these molecules are referred to as the "metabolome". We are interested in capturing as much as possible of the metabolome both quantitatively and dynamically and use this information to biochemically understand cellular physiology and pathology.
